Most churches run pads off a laptop or a phone, through an app, into the board. It works. It's also one more device, one more cable, and one more thing somebody has to remember.
The Atmosphere by Aerospace Audio puts the whole thing in a pedal.
It's a compact pedal that replaces the usual pad rig. Instead of a MIDI keyboard, software, and a couple pieces of hardware, you've got one box.
Plug it in with an instrument cable, run it into a direct box, and you're done.
Power it on, connect your instrument and your DI. That's the whole setup.
From there you use the up and down arrows to change keys and move between patches. Soft footswitches handle preset changes, so you're not reaching down mid-song.
The pads fill the room the way you want them to. My favorite is the Troposphere patch, which is warm without sitting on top of everything else.
It sits well under an acoustic guitar, whether that's one person leading or a full band.
I've run it through a bunch of services. The thing that matters most in practice is changing keys between songs without breaking the ambience. You step on it, it moves, the room never notices a gap.
That's the part a laptop setup usually gets wrong, because somebody has to be watching a screen instead of watching the room.
This is where it earns its spot. Leading alone, an acoustic and a voice can feel thin. The pad fills in underneath and the whole thing sounds fuller without another person on the platform.
It works in an electric guitar chain too. I used it that way at a smaller night of worship, sitting underneath the acoustic and vocals.
You can connect it to a computer over USB and load your own pads. If your team already has a pad library you like, you're not stuck with what shipped on it.
Get it if a person on your platform is going to run pads, especially if that person is already playing an instrument. It's built for a musician's feet, not for a tech booth.
Skip it if pads are already running fine from the booth off a laptop that never causes you trouble. This solves a specific problem, which is having one less computer involved in your Sunday.
Which is the same trade I keep coming back to. A dedicated piece that does one job beats a general-purpose machine doing five.
